He also captained the side for six seasons from 1988-1989 to 1991-1992 and again in 1995-1996 which was incidentally his final season at Stradey Park before departing to take up coaching duties with Leeds in the 1996-1997 season. Today, the former Scarlets made his return to Stradey Park on a three year contract as our new Director of Rugby.

“Both the Board and I are delighted that Phil has accepted the post of Director of Rugby here at the Scarlets” says Scarlets Chief Executive Stuart Gallacher. “He is a former Scarlet, who has been away for far too long and we’re very proud to be able to announce his return home.”

“He will be given the full support of coaches and players alike and we’re delighted that he has chosen to lead us into a new era here at the Scarlets, it’s a new year, with a new stadium just around the corner and we’re looking forward with excitement.”

Even with pretty big boots to fill, Phil is certain that there is plenty he can bring to our new chapter.

“Gareth’s 24 years of coaching and the numerous more playing days dedicated to the Scarlets will always be acknowledged and respected – it is the achievements of Gareth that I feel gives us the history and tradition that we are so proud of and one that I have been part of myself, having played and captained Llanelli here at Stradey Park,” said Davies.

“My appointment is about our future, about moving forward and creating a new chapter to add to that great history. I’m a proud Scarlet – always have been, and I think that once you’ve played for the Scarlets it stays with you for life and I’m humbled to be given this opportunity.”

As Phil prepares to take to the helm from June 1st, Paul Moriarty has also this week signed a further two-year contract to remain alongside conditioning coach Wayne Procter and Team Manager Anthony Buchanan as part of the backroom team.
