Wales sevens captain Richie Pugh has challenged his young squad to go one better next weekend after claiming the Plate title in the opening round of the HSBC World Sevens Series.

Wales kicked off their new campaign in style, winning all three of their games in Pool D.  Fiji then knocked the Welsh side out of the Cup competition at the quarter-final stage but they re-grouped to beat France and then Samoa to win the Plate competition.

In doing so they claimed 13 Series points and Pugh is looking to build on that next weekend in the Dubai leg.

“The team really stepped up,” he said. “This was new to a lot of them, we had a lot of first time players but it was a brilliant effort and they never gave up.

“We lifted ourselves against a tough French team and the way we beat Samoa was testament to the boys. It is nice to beat England and top our pool, but we didn’t step up in the Fiji game and hopefully next week we can go one better.

“Welsh rugby is on a high at the moment and there is no reason it can’t drop down to the Sevens level, so it is really good for the youngsters.”
