World Record Attempt Take Two at Crynant

A group of Welsh rugby clubs is giving members of the public the chance to be part of a Guinness World Record on Saturday.

Dulais Valley, which is an amalgamation of Crynant, Banwen and Seven Sisters’ junior and youth teams, is organising the second ‘Big Catch’ event at Crynant RFC, in an attempt to break the current record of 279 consecutive rugby passes.

The first event of the kind was held two years ago, also at Crynant, and although it was a very successful day for the club in terms of bringing everyone together and recruiting both players and volunteers, the record attempt wasn’t recognised by the Guinness World Records due to insufficient official evidence.

This year, however, the organisers are more hopeful with Neath Port Talbot College filming the passes and the Welsh Rugby Union again providing a qualified referee to ensure the passes meet the required distance of five metres.

Big Catch 2 takes place at 1.30pm on Saturday but the fun and games will all kick off at 12

Event organiser Jamie Furber said, “The first event was a massive success for the club and that’s a big reason for doing it again. It helped us to recruit volunteers and players, and the Dulais Valley partnership has really gone from strength to strength with teams now at every level from under 7 to under 13 and a youth team.

“The three clubs play a full part too, taking it in turns to host training and matches.

“However, there is also a bit of unfinished business with regards the record attempt and now that we have a qualified referee to adjudicate the passes, we are hoping to get into the Guinness Book of Records with over 279 passes.

“Anyone over 8 can take part in the Big Catch, the more the merrier, just turn up and get involved.

“There will be something for everyone on the day, from zorbing to a reptile display, food stalls and live music – we are also hoping the passing practice with our teams in the week will pay off and improve our skill levels!”
