Kieran Meek

Kieran Meek went through 500 points for Pontypool

Pontypool enjoyed their first taste victory at The Gnoll since December, 1991, as they ran in eight tries to secure a comprehensive 54-12 triumph over Neath in the Specsavers National Championship.

Darren Hughes scored first and then fed Michael Herbert for try number two. Further tries flowed from Geraint Walsh and Ieuan Jones with the bonus-point in the bag by the break.

Kieran Meek converted all four tries for a 28-7 interval lead and later went to 500 points in a Pooler shirt when he added the extras to Pat Lewis’ score just after the re-start. Lewis Barnett then scored a try on his debut with Aaron Quick also touching down twice in the second half.

Meek added another two more conversions as Pooler made it 15 wins out of 15 in a season in which they have so far taken all but one point from a possible 75 on offer. It was also their 62nd league victory on the bounce.

Pooler’s nearest challengers, Bargoed, remain 11 points back with a game in hand after their 42-8 defeat of Glamorgan Wanderers. Huw Rees, Ronny Kynes, Callum Davies, Adam Jones, Rhys Buckley and Wade Langley scored the Bargoed tries – all converted by Steffan Jones.

Meanwhile Bedwas, in third, ran out 31-15 bonus-point victors’ at Ystalyfera. Owen Jones scored a try in each half for the Wass with Jordan Rees and Lewis Davies also going over. Dion McIntosh kicked the rest.

That defeat for Ystalyfera saw them slip to the foot of the table after Tata Steel ended a nine-game losing streak – going back to 12 October – as they won 24-17 at Trebanos. Tata had led 21-10 at the interval courtesy of tries from Evan Herbert, Morgan Williams and Jack Brooks, which were all converted by Mitchell Jones, who later added a penalty to secure Tata only their second victory of the season.

Elsewhere, Ystrad Rhondda’s revival continued as they triumphed 23-11 at Narberth to make it four on the bounce. Mason Roderick and Rhys Truelove – who also kicked 13 points – were their try scorers.

A try from Spencer Gibson and a penalty try helped seal a 14-3 win for Cross Keys over Maesteg Quins at Pandy Park. It was a win that moved them five points clear of fourth bottom Beddau, who did at least bag a try bonus point in a 45-24 home defeat by Cardiff Met.
