Colin Charvis will lead Wales out tonight in Wrexham, aware that this series of internationals is crucial to the side’s confidence ahead of World Cup 2003

Last seasons Six Nations Championship saw the national side low on confidence- but that feeling has been replaced with a resolute determination to follow up the good work in South Africa.

‘I think all too often people look at the result, and the team with the ‘W’ against their name gets all the credit,’ said Charvis.

‘We will be looking for good performances, people taking hold of the Welsh jersey and putting some pride in it, and showing that they have the enthusiasm to play for this country.

‘I think in this series we need to be judged on whether or not we show that we can string some decent performances that are worthy of the shirt.’

Competitive matches against Romania (world ranked 16), Fiji (ranked 13), Canada (ranked 11) and then World number 1’s New Zealand, leave Colin with no doubt that these are serious tests for Wales, who are ranked in eighth place.

‘I think our opponents throughout November are worthy opponents and we’ve got to provide great performances throughout the series.’

And the skipper knows his captain’s status does not allow him special treatment.

‘I’m sure if I don’t perform in the first couple of games then Steve will have no hesitation in dropping me. That’s something I have to accept. I’m looking for some good performances from myself.

Charvis is in support of Hansen’s squad selection.

‘I think you’ve got to go for a balance of current day form and players that have provided in the past in big events – and I think Steve has gone for that.

‘Any young players who have come in shouldn’t feel daunted, they have earned their place in the squad, and they are an important part of our next 12 months development.’
