WRU STATEMENT

The Welsh Rugby Union is actively seeking to develop participation in women’s rugby across the whole of Wales.

Discussions are taking place with Sport Wales aimed at achieving the objective across the fifteen-a -side game and with potential enhanced involvement in sevens.

The WRU is committed to continuing women’s involvement in the Six Nations programme at fifteen-a-side while actively seeking funding opportunities to develop a sevens strand.

Sevens activity is being seen as an opportunity to attract more women into rugby with the fifteen-a-side game reaping the benefits of greater participation.

The sevens involvement in future Commonwealth Games and potentially the Olympics subject to qualification, is being seen as an opportunity to attract interest in the overall strategy.

The WRU is keenly aware of the importance of women in sport and is proud of its commitment to remain supportive of women in rugby.
