Thomas ready for Sardis experience

Dan Thomas admits Llanelli’s visit to Sardis Road for the Principality Premiership final on Saturday is a daunting prospect.

Flanker Thomas enjoyed a superb season with Danny Wilson’s Wales Under 20 side, impressing with ball in hand as Wales came close to a first ever Six Nations Grand Slam.

And after taking that form back into the Principality Premiership with Llanelli, Thomas now finds himself in Saturday evening’s final against Pontypridd.

The Sardis Road club have had a season to remember and are just one game away from a sensational league and cup double.

Llanelli went down to a 27-18 defeat to Pontypridd on the final day of the regular season and with memories of that defeat still fresh, the west Wales side know they will have to play their best game of the season to secure a result.

“Pontypridd is never a nice place to go to be honest,” said Thomas.

“But the boys are playing well and we’re full of confidence after the win over Llandovery so we’ll see what happens.”

While Llanelli will be underdogs in Saturday’s final, they can look to history in search of inspiration. Pontypridd were runaway Premiership leaders in 2011 but in the final, Llanelli travelled to Sardis Road and secured a shock victory which saw them crowned champions.

And going into the game following a derby semi-final win over Llandovery, Llanelli should not be lacking in confidence.

Thomas continued his knack of scoring as he crossed for one of Llanelli’s four tries at Church Bank, a game which should be perfect preparation for Saturday’s final.

“It was a tough game to be honest but thankfully the boys came out on top,” Thomas said immediately after the semi-final.

“We spoke in the first half about not letting them back into it but we dug in and I thought our defence was outstanding.

“Now we move on to Pontypridd.”
