Last season it was Treorchy who shattered Bargoed, now it was Beddau’s turn to triumph 30-21, coming after they had lost both home and away to Bargoed in the Championship.

It was a match that showed just how gutsy were coach Justin Burnell and his Beddau squad as they battled away and visibly grew in confidence as the game wore on.

Bargoed were met by a stream of fine tackles and when Dafydd Carter dropped James Pizey’s pass with the line looming, their biggest chance had gone.

Early penalties by Tom Benjamin for Beddau and Chris Mapps for Bargoed were followed by a great forward drive and try from Beddau skipper Rob Downes that Benjamin converted.

However, Mapps kicked another penalty only for Beddau to score a smart try as Adam Williams sent Benjamin clear.
Bargoed came back with slick passing sending wing Simon Parry over and Mapps converted, but Benjamin’s penalty took Beddau to 18-16 at the interval.

It was a further 27 tense minutes before another score came as a clever pass sent replacement flanker George Lee in at the corner for a curcial score.

With eight minutes remaining, strong forward play led to swift passing and Beddau left wing Curtis Cunningham went in at the corner with Benjamin landing the extra points.

Bargoed gave it their best shot and deserved a consolation try by lively wing replacement Gareth Dare after a superb 50-metre move with several players involved.

It was just too late though and Beddau had deservedly won it with referee Gwyn Morris (Cardiff) turning in a top-class performance and not one card was needed to be shown in a fine 80 minutes of good-class rugby.

Scorers: Beddau: Tries: R Downes, T Benjamin, G Lee, C Cunningham. Cons: T Benjamin (2); Pens: T Benjamin (2).
Bargoed: Tries: S Parry, G Dare. Con: C Mapps. Pens: C Mapps (3).
