The club sealed their title triumph and promotion to the Championship with 85 points and exactly 100 tries – 10 of which came from centre Matthew Davies.

It’s been a successful second season in Division 1 West for the squad who have vastly improved on their ninth place finish from the previous campaign.

Tondu’s celebrations came a week after former player Lee Byrne featured heavily in the Heineken Cup final for runners up Clermont Auvergne.

Captain and Tondu’s top points scorer during the campaign, Paul Smithson said: “I think the key to our success this season has been consistency – consistency in the playing squad and consistency in the results.

“We got off to a flying start winning games with vital bonus points. We’re a relatively small squad but we’re close and we know each other well. We’ll move forward next season and embrace the underdog status that we’ll get in a higher division. It’s always good to get a new challenge against new teams.”

Head Coach Gerald Williams said: “It’s been a long hard season and we’re delighted to be crowned as champions. Our goal at the start of the season was to win the league and we’ve achieved that. We maintained our form throughout the campaign – starting off strongly and then regrouping after a little blip midway through the season and picking up important points.

“We’ve got a strong unit here and a good group of players to move forward. This season there have been some big performances with players really stepping up to the plate.”
