Coombs: Japan a huge opportunity

Wales second row Andrew Coombs believes the tour of Japan is an ideal opportunity for players to make their mark on the international scene.

The 28-year-old made an immediate impact for Wales upon making his debut in the RBS 6 Nations opener against Ireland.

And as he heads to Japan with the 27-man squad, Coombs is encouraging the new players in the squad to relish the opportunity.

“I got given an opportunity earlier in the year and I took it and I hope some of the squad can do the same,” he said.

“I don’t feel like the new boy anymore and it’s nice for others to be in the position to possibly win their first caps.

“I’m still as hungry as I was before I got capped and I know that I have to keep pushing myself because of the strength in depth in the second row.

“There is so much quality and depth in this squad and then there are the likes of Ian Evans, Alun Wyn Jones and Luke Charteris to come back.

“There is so much competition and all of us on tour know that we have to give a good account of ourselves and come away with two wins.

“We’ve been given a massive opportunity to make a statement ahead of the autumn tests and each player will want to prove themselves.

“The only way we can do that is by winning both Tests and we know that won’t easy against Japan.

“They are well coach by Eddie Jones and have come on leaps and bounds recently.

“We have to impost ourselves on them and be physical so that means there is pressure on us forwards, but it’s a challenge we are excited by.”
