Wales stars shine in Lions rout

Wales stars Mike Phillips and Alex Cuthbert scored try doubles as the British and Irish Lions began their 2013 tour with a 59-8 victory over the Barbarians in an intensely humid affair in Hong Kong.

The Welsh duo were joined in the try scoring charts by countrymen Jonathan Davies, Dan Lydiate and Alun Wyn Jones after Lions captain Paul O’Connell began the rout by scoring the opening try to guide his side to a comfortable victory.

Wasps youngster Elliot Daly landed a long-range penalty to put the Barbarians on the board but with a dominant set piece it wasn’t long before the Lions gained control.

O’Connell ploughed over from close range after Davies and Jamie Roberts made early inroads. Phillips then evaded the Lions defence to score and with Owen Farrell knocking over conversions and penalties, Warren Gatland’s men led 23-3 at the break.

Phillips coasted over for his second try before the Barbarians hit back through Kahn Fotuali’i.

Davies scrambled over for the next try before winger Cuthbert got two in double quick time. The Lions got over the half century mark when departing Newport Gwent Dragons flanker Dan Lydiate scored before replacement Alun Wyn Jones completed a great day for the Welsh contingent in the touring squad by scoring the final try.

Scorers: Barbarians – Tries: Fotuali’i. Pens: Daly; British and Irish Lions – Tries: O’Connell, Phillips 2, Davies, Cuthbert 2, Lydiate, A. Jones. Cons: Farrell 3, Sexton 2. Pens: Farrell 3.
