Road to Finals Day: Burry Port

When Gareth Gravell agreed to return to his home town team of Burry Port as director of rugby he was famously quoted as saying that his first job was about “restoring pride back in the shirt”.

That was in the 2013/2014 season and it ended with Burry Port winning the then Swalec Division 6 West title. Fast forward two seasons and the club is in the hunt for a league and cup double.

While there is still a fair bit of work to be done in Division 3 West B, where the club currently sit in third place, nine points off the leaders with two games in hand, a lot of the hard work has been done in chasing the dream in the SSE Swalec Bowl.

Wins over Tumble and Aberdare in the quarter and semi finals secured a trip to Principality Stadium this weekend, where Gravell’s side will face Taffs Well. Neither side has ever been this far in the national cup competitions, but Gravell knows all about what it takes to win at the home of Welsh rugby.

A former Wales Under 21 and Wales Sevens international, who played for Wales at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, back row man Gravell won the Swalec Cup with Neath in 2008 and 2009 at the Millennium Stadium, but was on the losing side as captain of Cardiff against Llandovery in 2007 and Neath again in 2013 when they lost to Cross Keys.

In an all-action career he played for Newport, Coventry, Cardiff and Neath, captaining the Black & Ambers to the inaugural Principality Premiership title in 2004 and winning it twice more with Neath in 2008 and 2010.

His experience could be vital this weekend, as will be that of the former Llanelli and Wales Under 20 star Darren Daniel. The 29-year-old plumber was in the Llanelli side that beat Pontypridd 25-24 in the 2005 Swalec Cup final and he will be relishing a trip back to the Welsh capital with his home town team.

It is going to be a big weekend for Burry Port because two more famous rugby products, Adam and Aaron Warren, will also be in action at the Principality Stadium. Once capped Adam is hoping to help the Dragons beat the Scarlets in the Judgement Day IV battle on Saturday, while Aaron is set to feature in the Llandovery back division in the Swalec Cup final against Carmarthen Quins.
