Owen had been president of his beloved Baglan RFC for over 20 years and dedicated his life to Welsh rugby as a player, coach, and administrator.

He was a formidable player for Aberavon in the 1970’s and was well respected by Welsh rugby greats such as Sir Gareth Edwards, and the late Phil Bennett.

Aberavon posted a moving tribute to their former player on their social channels.

“Everyone at Aberavon RFC will be sad to hear that Jimmy Owen has passed away whilst on holiday abroad yesterday. A cornerstone of his beloved Baglan RFC he was a great man, a real character. In both clubs he will be sorely missed as well as by his many friends in and outside of rugby.  Our thoughts are with his family,” it said.

Baglan RFC announced Owen’s death on their twitter channel, “With great sadness we announce the passing of club legend Jimmy Owen former Player, Captain, Coach, Secretary and President. Jimmy was an amazing man who was friends with everyone and loved his club. We can not thank you enough for all you have done over the decades.”

His funeral will be held at Margam Crematorium at midday this Friday.
