It is 100 years since the start of WWI when 13 Welsh rugby internationals lost their lives in the battlefields of Europe.
Former Wales Triple Crown captain HB Winfield is one international who survived the war and returned from the trenches only to lose his life in a motorbike accident.
HB Winfield was the brother in law of another great name of Welsh rugby, Gwyn Nicholls, but as the pair ran a family business together, Gwyn was spared the perils of war. Winfield’s grandson, Nick Williams has shared some treasured letters from the trenches to Gwyn and other members of his family which tell the remarkable tale of what life was like at that time.
